Indenture of John Holme of Holme and Elizabeth, his wife, 1432

Indenture recording a grant to farm of a capital messuage in Thorngumbald and lands, by John Holme of Holme, esquire, and Elizabeth, his wife, to Thomas Stayneton of Thorngumbald for his life, 4 June 1432.

Thorngumbald, Paull Holme and Askholme are in the parish of Paull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The Holme family is said to have held the manor of Paull Holme from the late 13th century, and to have acquired the manor of Thorngumbald through the marriage of John Holme to Elizabeth Wastney in 1429. Paull Holme remained until 1928 in the hands of descendants of the Holme family, who had adopted that surname, and a ruined tower of their manor house still survives there. Translation:
This indenture made between John Holme of Holme, esquire, and Elizabeth, his wife, of the one part and Thomas Stayneton' of Thornegubaud of the other part attests that the aforesaid John and Elizabeth have granted and demised to farm to the aforesaid Thomas their capital messuage in the aforesaid vill of Thornegubaud, 1 bovate and a half of land with their appurtenances, 6 pasture-lands in Askholme, 10 acres of land at Elholme, 5 acres of land at Grayuesend (or Graynesend), 1 close called Calfcroft and 1 close called Kirkecroft with their appurtenances in Thornegubaud aforesaid late in the holding of Robert Torell' and 1 close of pasture called Westcroft late in the holding of the lord with its appurtenances in the same place and 1 croft with its appurtenances in the same place late in the holding of Robert Williamson, to have and to hold the aforesaid capital messuage, 1 bovate and a half of land with their appurtenances, 6 pasture-lands in Askholme, 10 acres of land at Elholme, 5 acres of land at Grayuesend, 1 close called Calfcroft, 1 close called Kirkecroft, 1 close of pasture called Westcroft and 1 croft late in the holding of Robert Williamson with all their appurtenances to the aforesaid Thomas only for the term of his life rendering therefor yearly to the aforesaid John and Elizabeth or either of them or to their attorneys 6 pounds 2 shillings and 6 pence of lawful money of England at the feasts of St Martin in Winter and Pentecost by equal portions and doing his suit of court in the same place and all other charges and services in what way soever belonging to the said holding. And furthermore the aforesaid Thomas is to collect and raise the rents and farms and issues of the aforesaid court for John and Elizabeth in the same place and faithfully account and answer for them during all the aforesaid term, taking from the aforesaid John and Elizabeth every other year 1 gown of the delivery of the aforesaid John and Elizabeth. And the aforesaid Thomas shall repair, sustain and manure the aforesaid capital messuage and all the houses built on it, all the closes and crofts abovesaid and all the abovesaid lands at his own costs and expenses during all the term abovesaid, timber excepted, together with the unwrought timber, which the aforesaid John and Elizabeth shall find as often as it shall be necessary during the aforesaid term, and he shall leave all the aforesaid messuage, closes, croft and land at the end of his term in as good a state or better just as at the beginning he received them. And the aforesaid John and Elizabeth shall warrant the aforesaid capital messuage, 1 bovate and a half of land with their appurtenances, 6 pasture-lands in Askholme, 10 acres of land at Elholme, 5 acres of land at Grayuesende, 1 close called Calfcroft, 1 close called Kirkecroft, 1 close of pasture called Westcroft and 1 croft late in the holding of Robert Williamson with all their appurtenances to the aforesaid Thomas only for the term of his life against all men. In testimony of which to these indentures the aforesaid parties have alternately set their seals, these being witnesses, Thomas Sutton' of Cameryngton', Thomas P[er]cy, William Ingeram of Rihyll', John Ryse of Paule, Thomas Youhird of Thornegubaud and others, given at Holme aforesaid on the fourth day of June in the tenth year of the reign of King Henry the Sixth after the conquest of England [4 June 1432].
