Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage: Volume 3: Clinton

CLINTON

Volume 3, page 315:
He [William (de Clinton), Lord Clinton] m., 3rdly, Mary, widow of Sir Henry RETFORD, of Carlton Paynel, and of Castlethorpe, co. Lincoln. He d. 30 July (or 20 Aug.) 1431. His widow (who occurs as such 7 Jan. 1431/2) m., 3rdly, Sir John HERON, of Northumberland. She d. 2 Feb. 1458/9.

At her marriage to William de Clinton, Mary was the widow of both Sir Henry Retford (who died shortly before 16 June 1409) and Sir John Heron of Eppleton, county Durham (who died 12 September 1420).

For Sir Henry Retford's death, see the article on him in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography [which cites Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1408-1413, p. 83 (actually 89)]. John Heron, knight, and Mary, his wife, in 1413-1414 held lands and tenements late of Henry Ridford in Broughton, Lincolnshire [Pipe Roll, E 372/259, Lincolnshire, dorse; cited by Lincoln Central Library, Ross MSS, vol. 2, p. 41, as Pipe Roll, 13 Henry IV]. Sir John Heron's date of death is given in his Hertfordshire inquisition post mortem [C 138/44/17]. The writ for her own inquisition post mortem describes her as Mary, who was the wife of William Clynton, knight, late the wife of John Heron, knight, and late the wife of Henry Ratford, knight [C 139/174/40].
