Charter of Sir William and Alice de Hoo for Sir Roger de Pedewardyne, 1366

Charter of William de Hoo, knight, and Alice, his wife, granting to Roger de Pedewardyne, knight, their lands and tenements in South Warnborough in the county of Hampshire, which were formerly of Nicholas Malmayenes. The lands were to be held successively for their lives by Roger, by Hugh de Thorp, chaplain, and by Richard, son of William de Burton, citizen and goldsmith of London, and then to remain to the right heirs of Roger. South Warnborough, 23 October 1366.

Sir William de Hoo's first wife, Alice, was the daughter and heir of Sir Thomas de St Omer by his first wife, Pernel, daughter and coheir of Sir Nicholas Malmayns [Complete Peerage, vol. 6, p. 566]. The small canted (i.e. slanted) shield at the bottom of the larger seal presumably bears the arms of Hoo (quarterly sable and argent) with a label, indicating that the grantor's father was still alive (he died in 1380 [Sussex Archaeological Collections, vol. 8, p. 130 (1856)]).

Translation:
Know those present and future that I, William de Hoo, knight, and Alice my wife have given, granted and by this our present charter confirmed to Roger de Pedewardyne, knight, all the lands and tenements, rents and services, which we have in Southwarneburn in the county of Southampton, and which were formerly of Nicholas Malmayenes. To have and to hold to the aforesaid Roger for the whole of his life of the chief lords of the fee, in such a way that after the death of the aforesaid Roger the aforesaid tenements, rents and services are to wholly remain to Sir Hugh de Thorp, chaplain. To hold for the whole of his life, and after the death of the aforesaid Hugh, the aforesaid tenements, rents and services are to wholly remain to Richard, son of William de Burton, citizen and goldsmith of London. To hold for the whole of his life, and after the death of the aforesaid Richard, the said tenements, rents and services are to wholly remain to the right heirs of the aforesaid Roger forever. To hold of the chief lords of the fee by the services thereupon due and accustomed. And I, the aforesaid William de Hoo, knight, and Alice my wife and our heirs shall warrant forever against all men the aforesaid tenements, rents and services to the aforesaid Roger for the whole of his life, to Hugh for the whole of his life, to Richard for the whole of his life and to the right heirs of the said Roger forever in the form, which is aforesaid. In testimony of which matter, to this our present charter we have affixed our seals. Dated at Southwarneburn on Friday next after the feast of St Luke the Evangelist in the 40th year of the reign of King Edward III after the conquest [23 October 1366].
