This is a draft index of place-names and personal names in feet of fines for Kent of 1272-1307 and 1338-1377 (covering CP 25/1/98/56-100/80 and CP 25/1/103/133-108/207, numbers 383-2226).
The search results give the reference number of each fine, an indication of its date, lists of personal and place-names, and links to photographs of the documents at the Anglo-American Legal Tradition website.
Forenames have been translated to English where equivalents exist. But note that the English forms used are different in some cases from those used in the main index of abstracts of feet of fines. In this index Latin-based forms have been used more often, in order to differentiate between men and women.
Surnames and place-names have been transcribed as they appear in the documents, but with abbreviations extended, except for some abbreviated non-Latin place-names where the modern form has been added. Otherwise there has been no attempt to standardise surnames or to identify modern place-names. So it will be essential to use wildcards and/or soundex to allow for spelling variations. Please note also that where 'v' has been written in a form indistinguishable from 'u' (as is usually the case in the medieval period), it has been transcribed as 'u'.
Please note also that the names have been transcribed from the photographs at AALT, in which not all the text is legible. I intend to look at the original documents in the future, in the hope that more can be read.
